Welcome to POE, Liz!  When I read your info I felt as if I was looking in a mirror almost.  I am 56 years old and live in Manassas, VA, just up the road from you (well, a couple of hours up the road).  I, too, am a secretary (law firm) in Washington, DC.  My daughter's name is Liz as well (shortened from Elizabeth by her).  And on most Saturday evenings you will also find me curled up on the sofa, remote in hand, ready to enjoy my favorite Britcoms.  Even if the shows weren't on TV, I own the entire DVD set of "As Time Goes By", I love it so much.  And who doesn't love Hyacinth Bucket (Boo-kay!).  The highlight of my work day is when I have a few minutes free to enjoy this beautiful website.  I am fortunate to have visited England twice and Wales once.  I miss being there every day, as if it is my true home, you know?  I hope you get to go someday yourself.  Anyway, welcome to the site, and I do hope you will also enjoy the various forum threads.  We have a fun bunch of folks here with whom to chat, laugh, and share.  Enjoy!

Thank you for your welcoming words everybody. What a friendly bunch everyone is! I do hope to sail "across the pond" one day for a visit (I only fly in emergencies, and then only if I have tranquilizers along!)

Barbara in Manassas, I wanted to tell you...

My mother's name was Barbara!  I am Elizabeth Ann (named after my maternal grandmother, who was a Wallace--I forgot to say that I am Scottish too), but my father nicknamed me Liz. And every day I miss my native Rochester/Finger Lakes area, which I believe to be the second-most beautiful spot in the world, after England. I'm glad you've been to visit England and Wales.

I enjoy "As Time Goes By" so very much. For 30 minutes each week, I let myself pretend that I am part of that wonderful family (I would just love to know Judi Dench--she seems like she would be such fun to be around). Hyacinth is fun, too, but she wears me out after about 15 minutes!

Well, thank you again for your welcome and I will enjoy visiting whenever I have a chance. Take care, all, and Greetings from Virginia!

Oh my goodness, Liz!  My middle name is Ann, and my daughter's name is Elizabeth Anne.  To the best of my knowledge, my ancestry is mostly English with a portion of Irish and Scottish mixed in.  My maiden name is Newkirk.

Do you only watch "As Time Goes By" for 30 minutes, or do you only get one episode on Saturday night?  I get 4 different PBS stations, 3 of which show episodes of ATGB, "Keeping Up Appearances," "Are You Being Served?", "Last of the Summer Wine,", "To the Manor Born," "Fawlty Towers," and several others.  So I can watch as many as 3 episodes of ATGB and 2 or 3 of KUA and AYBS.  Such a treat!  The only times they aren't on is when the stations are doing their fundraisers and they have special programming then.

Hi Barbara--My mom's middle name was Ann, too! My best friend (seen in my Avatar photo, which I just posted) is also my needlework business partner, named Ann Pettit! "Ann" just seems to go with Elizabeth. My maiden name is Gale.

We only get 2 PBS stations in Richmond, and only 1 that carries ATGB, so, alas, I can only catch it once a week. I've seen all the others you've mentioned, and my husband and I were/are HUGE fans of Fawlty Towers, as well as Monty Python. My husband's memory is amazing; he can hear a Monty Python routine twice and quote it back verbatim!

I used to work at my local PBS affiliate, WXXI, in Rochester, NY, way back in the late '70s. I was the Assistant Auction Coordinator (glorified and underpaid secretary).

Take care all!  Cheerio!
