it's an old carnival expression. they used to give cigars away to the winners for the games along the arcade. so, if you made a valiant effort ... "close, but no cigar".

Evey, the merchent navy used to be known for 'gay' men (not all I may add) but times have moved on lol. When I was 18 a bunch of us teenagers that used to hang around together split and went our seperate ways in life, me and another pal joined the RAF whist another enrolled in the Merchent Navy. The night before he joined his first ship, docked at Liverpool we throw a party for him in our local pub and waved him off. Two days later he was back home , having 'jumped ship'. He said his first night on board, two hairy Scotsmen kept trying to get in his bunk with him lol. He never went back Lol

It was probably me, as I use that expression quite a bit.

The photo was taken at Cannon Beach, Oregon. That is Haystack Rock behind me. Cannon Beach has to be one of my most favourtie places in the Untied States.

I live in rural Nevada though.
