A look through the photos on Poe should give you a few ideas. The boats on Derwent Water seems one of the classic scenes and dawn and sunset seems best for this shot.

Up a very small road---B5289---between Borrowsdale and Watendlath is the pretty Ashness Bridge.   http://www.picturesofengland.com/England/Cumbria/Ashness_Bridge/pictures/1025505  The best view might need wellies to go into the stream above it; ideally with tripod with camera's lowest Iso, and smallest apeture to get the shutter speed down, for the water flow. While most photos show it in landcape layout, taking it verticle with 2 photos to make a vertical panoramic of it also works well. Looks across Derwent Water towards Skiddaw peaks.

Shaun:

Have you ever visited the Castlerigg stone circle off the A66 (the Penrith road) between 1 and 2 miles east of Keswick? It is a spectacular site, jointly managed by English Heritage and the entire area is well worth a visit. Here are a couple of Jason T's great shots of the Castlerigg standing stones:

Hi Shaun - take a look at any of our Karen's photos - she lives in Cumbria and takes some amazing shots.

Photography aside - if you haven't been take the boys to Cumberland Pencil Museum if they like drawing - and surprisingly Sellafield - my boys loved both!

February should be quieter but as I dislike the crowds I found Esthwaite Water a breath of fresh air! There was hardly anyone there as it is just a small and lesser known lake and we hired a boat and rowed into the centre. It was such a nice day! Buttermere was lovely too. Look forward to seeing your photos!

Hi there Shaun

If you go to Keswick and then drive through Borrowdale you will eventually go over the pass on top of which is the slate quarry, which takes you over and down into Buttermere and Crummock Water.  I think you can get some lovely photographs here but when I took them a couple of years ago I did not think to save them to disk and at the time did not have a computer. I am sure you will find many lovely photo opportunities in the Lakes and will do them justice.  Have a lovely time.

Jane
