Hello from the sunny Southwest! I guess you could call me an Anglophile. :-) A big fan of BBC Dramas, British mysteries, Jane Austen, Agatha Christie, older Britcoms (love Keeping Up Appearances),etc.  My father was in the USAF, my mother is Greek so we spent 1982-1992 in Turkey and Greece. Was able to travel to many European countries because of this. Went to an international school in Athens. Visited London as a teenager but want to go back and see more of the country. My husband used to be in the USAF and he was stationed in Upper Heyford (now closed) and he wants to go back and visit, also.

History has always been very important to me/interesting to me, the Second World War, specifically. My American grandpa was in the US Navy during the war and then spent the rest of his military career in the USAF. My Greek grandfather was involved in the guerrilla war in NW Greece.

After years and years of procrastinating I am trying to start a book (I am a stay-at-home mom with a 3 yr old, hence "trying"). Main character will be an American pilot in the RAF (one of the "Few") and story will take place in Suffolk (mainly around RAF Martlesham Heath) but also RAF Kirton Lindsey. He love interst will be a lovely English young lady. :-)

This site is fabulous, obviously because of the gorgeous pics, but also for me to see places I cannot visit. I am trying to get a "feel" for the area.  If anyone has any suggestions, please, pass them along.

  Lara.

Great to have you here on POE.

Good luck with your book, I'm sure it will be wonderful, even if you have to write it around your little one.

Hi Lara, welcome to POE from Anna and Ron. I also spent several years at USAF Upper Heyford when the late Harold Golder was Station Warden there. I was responsible for the Pest Control Contract there. I also held the contracts for Barford St. Michael, Bicester, RAF Welford,  Greenham Common and many, many more base's throughout the UK for six years or more. No doubt your husband will remember these other bases also. Anyway, you are among many great friends here so enjoy it. You might even find that the site will help your research for the book you are writing.

Hi Lara, can I suguest you set your book in a summertime backdrop. perhaps the heroin could be a volunteer 'Land Army' girl. From a wealthy  middle class background, living close a an air base. maybe she could have an English boy friend that plan to marry, he could be a Spitfire pilot away on duty. she meets and falls in love with an american airman at a local village dance. she is torn between the two. Her Engilsih airman is shotdown leaving the relationship to blossom untill one day her american airman is called away on duty... i leave the rest to you lol. Mike

Thank you, all, for your kind welcome. (Bill, thanks for the suggestion... I have something like that in mind. There are just so many books about London and the Blitz, I wanted to write about another area of England.) BTW I am a huge fan of Foyle's War with Michael Kitchen. That show is a great inspiration.

 Have a great weekend!
