All I know was he was brought up in a Catholic home/orphanage in Broadstairs. I have found him in the 1891 census in Willesden, Middlesex aged 12. I am trying to find out any information regarding Catholic homes in Broadstairs around about 1800 - 1891, but so far have been unlucky and wonder whether anyone can help, or give me any ideas of how I can find this information.

It may be possible that you are looking for one of those. Google convalescent homes Broadstairs! |

All I know is that his Grandfather and his older sister were taken out of the workhouse and placed in separate homes, My mothers sister remembers going back there years later for a garden party just before it was closed down, but she cannot remeber where it was. |

My unlearned opinion would be contact the Catholic Diocese( or Archdiocese) which encompases Broadstairs. Most likely it would have an office (also called chancery) in the largest town near Broadstairs. At least that is how it is set up in USA. But I imagine it is quite similar in England as a diocese is simply an administrative district. They may be able to give you some information as your grandfather was, as we say, "in the system." In other words under some legal authority.
I can find neither grandmother nor grandfather in any census even though I knew where they were at the time. They were quite poor, but not in workhouses. I was wondering if they were ignored because of their poverty. In the 1890's they were in Liverpool. Good luck. |
