Canada geese at Bicton

In the ornamental pond at Bicton Swans are usually gliding by. At this time of year, however, flocks of Canada Geese amass in preparation for their migration.

Bicton Hermiage

Another place of solitude at Bicton is the Hermitage. Gaze out from a sunny seat, across a small water pond to the pine trees beyond.

Bicton ferns at the Shell House

Near the Shell House of Bicton is a rockery with a selection of paths to walk. These big ferns are on view amongst the rocks.

A Bicton seat with a view

Take the weight off your feet and sit awhile to soak up the view with a lovely blue sky, a tree, growing crops and faraway trees.

Bicton church

The Church of St Mary has been a feature of Bicton Park for over 150 years. It was consecrated in 1850 and was designed by Augustus Pugin.

Bicton flowers

Bicton has lots of flowers on display. Some in ornate patterned beds and some randomly planted. These "Red Hot Pokers" belong in the latter description.

The Hermitage, Bicton

The Hermitage was built in 1839 and is clad with thousands of "fish scale" wooden shingles. The area surrounding it has a notable collection of Dwarf Conifers and heathers and overlooks a small lake and "Fairy Garden" with a stream cascading over waterfalls.

Bicton Gardens

Bicton opened their gates to visitors, after the coronavirus epidemic, and the sky was threatening. Visitors walked around at the required social distancing to admire the spring colours and enjoy the fresh air.

Bicton Rectory

This was Bicton Rectory, now a private residence, and a Grade II listed building. It is on the outskirts of Otterton and can be seen when leaving, just as you turn left onto Frogmore Lane.

Bicton Obelisk

Bicton Obelisk, on the edge of the park, was built in 1747 by Henry Rolle, 1st Baron Rolle (1708–1750) as a visual attraction for the gardens. The gardens, which originated in c.1730 are Grade I listed.
