East Budleigh chapel

East Budleigh's Salem Chapel was built in 1719 and enlarged by the addition of further galleries in 1836. In the 1980s it was bought by a private owner who failed to gain support for his plans. The building then fell into disrepair. The Historic Chapels Trust visited it in 1996 and acquired its ownership in 1998.It is reputed that during the 18th and 19th centuries the chapel was involved with smuggling, involving its minister Samuel Leat, the smuggled goods being concealed in the chapel's large roof space

East Budleigh scarecrows

Every year in, June, East Budleigh has a Scarecrow Festival in aid of church funds. The residents deck the surrounding areas with scarecrows that they make. All are judged by a committee of locals and awarded cups and medals for the best showing. It is quite a spectacle and eagerly awaited.

Hayes Barton

Hayes Barton is the birth place of Sir Walter Raleigh, who was an English landed gentleman, writer, poet, soldier, politician, courtier, spy and explorer. He was born c. 1552 (or 1554) and was executed on 29 October 1618. The plan of Hayes Barton is a capital E in honour of Queen Elizabeth.

The Walter Raleigh

The public house in East Budleigh is called The Sir Walter Raleigh. Raleigh was born at Hayes Barton, which is nearby, and his parents are buried in the church grounds.

In 2006 a life-size bronze statue of Walter Raleigh, by sculptor Vivien Mallock, was unveiled by the Duke of Kent.
