Otterton Hawk

A steel sculpture, I call Hawkeye, keeps his beady eyes open at Otterton Mill as people stroll by looking around. He gets more red the more it rains.

Otterton between showers. There are usually cars parked bumper to bumper so this is really a rare shot nowadays

Park Lane gateposts

From Otterton you can walk on an old road, now a cycleway and footpath, back to Budleigh Salterton. This way is called Park Lane. A bridge crosses the River Otter - Clamour Bridge - and there is a set of old Gateposts. There is no trace of any hinges remaining on the posts so if gates were ever hung I don't know. It is, however, a pleasant, cool, shaded walk on a hot sunny day.

Otterton Mill

The Mill at Otterton is still a working mill and more. There is a cafe, museum, gift shop, grocery shop and an upstairs music hall in the evenings. A watermill was recorded in this locality in the Domesday Book in 1068.

Otterton Brick Cross

Sited on B3178 and built in 1580 by the Sheriff of Devon. In 1734 Lord Rolle added plaques to each face describing to where the roads lead.

Misty Mutter Moor

On the coastal hilltop between Otterton and Sidmouth is Mutter Moor. It is a haven for wildlife, footpaths and dog walkers. It can sometimes be quite misty and mysterious looking too but on a clear day the views are expansive and varied .

Be careful what you eat and where you eat it, when fruit picking in Otterton. Some of these blackberries could be a little hard and not taste nice - unless you like French food.

The River Otter Valley

The River Otter starts in Somerset and reaches Budleigh Salterton by many villages on its way to the sea. Just past Otterton and before entering the sea at Budleigh it passes through the Otter Estuary Nature Reserve, a Site of Special Scientific Interest. It is very pleasant on the eye.

Otterton butterfly

This Male Blue butterfly caught my eye as I was going through Otterton. It was resting on a nettle plant and looked very dainty.

Otterton Cows

Cows are very curious animals. If they aren't chewing grass or laying down chewing their cud they are usually peeping through a gate or fencing watching everything that passes.

Leafless

This leafless tree is obviously past its sell-by date. It can be viewed from Frogmore Road, Otterton to East Budleigh road.

Frogmore Road walk

A regularly used road from Otterton to East Budleigh, Frogmore Road is narrow and very rural with some beautiful views of the Otter Valley but high hedges.

Otterton cottages

This row of thatched cottages is called "The Green" and, surprisingly, they face the village green on the other side of the road from them.

Cow shade of Otterton

Today has been really hot and on the walk to Otterton by the River Otter these cows were coolling off in the shade of a clump of trees. It did not stop the flies bothering them, however, as their ears were twitching, heads were bobbing and their tails were flapping wildly.
