Altar of the Requiem Chapel, Dorchester Abbey The Requiem Chapel is a small chapel at the south side of the Abbey. In this picture, a simple wooden bier stands in front of the Altar. The Reredos is from the former Dorchester Missionary College. A stone carving of a 'Green Man' (an old religious symbol of regeneration) can be seen at the top right hand corner of the picture. Wall paintings in People's Chapel, Dorchester Abbey The People's Chapel was added to the Abbey in the mid 14th century for use as a Parish Church. The Wall Painting behind the Altar shows the Crucifixion and dates from the 14th century, with some 19th century restoration. Lady Chapel, Dorchester Abbey This small Chapel within Dorchester Abbey is dedicated to Our Lady - hence the name Lady Chapel. The wall decorations look ancient but are in fact late 19th century. The mystic rose motif and the 'MR' monogram (Maria Regina) illustrate devotion to the Blessed Virgin. The Reredos (Altar background) is a recently commissioned work by the artist Rebecca Hind, entitled 'Bright Rising'. Shrine of St. Birinus, Dorchester Abbey Birinus came to Wessex to convert the Saxons to Christianity. After Birinus converted King Cynegils of the West Saxons in AD 635, the King gave the old Roman town of Dorchester to Birinus to build a Cathedral. Birinus thus became the first Bishop of Dorchester. The original Shrine was broken up in 1536 and the present Shrine was reconstructed in 1964 from fragments of the original. The East Window and High Altar, Dorchester Abbey Behind the Altar, the impressively large east Window is made of largely 14th c glass collected from other windows in the church around 1814.
