The White Mark on Watlington Hill The White Mark was carved into the chalk of Watlington Hill in 1764 to give the illusion of a spire on the parish church when viewed from the house of the local squire. Unfortunately, the view from the house towards the hill is now largely obscured by trees, so the view here is from the hill towards the town centre. Rosebay Willow-herb growing wild at Watlington Hill Rosebay Willow-herb (also known as Fireweed in North America) is found in abundance at Watlington Hill, where the chalky soil is ideal for its growth.
