A picture of Oxford Sheldonian Theatre, Oxford The marvellous Sheldonian Theatre opened in 1669 and was the early work of Sir Christopher Wren. It is used for degree ceremonies and Encaenia which is a ceremony every June, in which the university's founders are commemorated and honorary degrees are bestowed on deserving famous people. A picture of Oxford Tom's Tower, Oxford. In 1681 Christopher Wren the architect responsible for St Paul's Cathedral finished Wolsey's gatehouse and added a massive octagonal tower and cupola. In it was hung a huge bell called Great Tom. The tradition of tolling the bell 101 times (once for each scholar) at the curfew time of 9.05pm continues to this day. This church was once the centre of university life, housing the treasury and university library and providing a setting for ceremonies and lectures.
