Victorian Kitchen The Victorian Kitchen has been re-created partly on its original site using many of the implements and cooking utensils used by the staff to keep the Montagu's and their guests fed. To effectively run a Victorian household took a considerable amount of staff who were frequently summoned through a pull which rang a bell located in the kitchen area. Upper Drawing Room Formerly chapels in the Great Gatehouse, the Upper Drawing Room and the adjoining Ante Room still display the religious origins of their past in their architecture. The christening of Lord Montagu’s first grandchild was celebrated in these rooms in 2001. The piano in the centre of the room is one of the English Broadwood company's earliest models. Private Dining Room The Private Dining Room formed part of the north chapel of the monastic gatehouse and was later known as the Oak Room, because of the linen-fold panelling around its walls. These panels were salvaged from the House of Commons by 1st Baron Montagu, Lord Henry with each one being slightly different. This room was originally a bedroom used by his wife Cecily. Lower Drawing Room Until the alterations of the 1870s, this was the entrance hall of Palace House. It has also been used as a dining room and gentlemen’s smoking room where topics deemed unsuitable for feminine ears could be discussed in private! When the House first opened, this room was used as a museum for the shipbuilding village of Buckler’s Hard. This picture appears in the following picture tour: Camera Make: SONY Model: DSC-RX100 |
Dining Hall Originally the Inner Hall of the monastic gatehouse, the Dining Hall was central to country house entertainment in the 18th and 19th centuries. Menu books surviving in the Beaulieu archives from this period reveal what the Montagu family were eating at different times of the year. The Dining Hall is still used by the Montagu family on special occasions, at Christmas and for birthdays. The huge table came from Ditton Park, a former Montagu property near Datchet in Buckinghamshire. It is made of a single elm tree and is 16 feet long. It originally stood in the servants' hall at Ditton Park and was brought to Beaulieu when Ditton was sold to the Admiralty during WWI. Ante Room The Ante Room where morning prayers were held for the servants. Formerly chapels in the Great Gatehouse, the Ante Room and the adjoining Upper Drawing Room still display the religious origins of their past in their architecture, most notably in the styling of the windows. The fireplace in the Ante Room is one of the more unusual features of the house, in that it is situated immediately beneath a window. There is consequently no central chimneypiece and the smoke is dispersed through flues on each side. This picture appears in the following picture tour: Camera Make: SONY Model: DSC-RX100 |
