I don't have an exact address but here are the details that I do have. Eliza Jane HANEY died in Lanchester in 1927 aged 59, I'm hoping to find a headstone in the cemetery there. Her son Francis Haney married Margaret Hanson in 1924 in Lanchester, the family were Catholic so I'm assuming they attended All Saints Church. Francis and Margarets children are -: Francis b 1925 Joseph b 1927 Mary C b 1929, Peter b 1931, Veronica b 1933 and Ann b 1937 all in Lanchester. I would be grateful if someone could let me know if there is a library in the area with some records please, so I can find out burial details and maybe some photos of any headstones as I'm doing this research from Sydney Australia. Thanks and Kind regards Dianna |

Lanchester got its name from the Roman fort of Longovicium situated half a mile south-west of Lanchester itself. It is believed that even before the Romans came to the area the valley was inhabited by Brigante tribes. Evidence of this was found at Hollybush Farm when an arrowhead was unearthed and also at Upperhouses Farm where a stone axe and a bust of a Celtic god was found. Evidence of saxon man has also been found with the discovery of a Viking sword, axe heads and scythes in a stream near Hurbuck cottages. The course of the disused railway line now known as the Lanchester Valley Walk provides pleasant walks in the direction of either Consett or Durham, where it links at each end with a network of other disused railways and tracks suitable for walking and cycling. At the Consett end the valley walk links to the SUSTRANS C2C cycle route. An award winning national cycle route stretching from Whitehaven and Workington in the North West of England to Sunderland or Tynemouth in the North East. |

If Eliza Haney is your G Grandmother her maiden name wouldn't be actually Haney would it?? My research was into the Irish side of the Haney family, which was actually Heaney but changed somehow. I will have to see if I have any details here and the research was for a friend of mine Michael (Mick) Haney who lives near me here in Sydney. Let me know, I will have to see if I still kept any information on my computer (or loose notes) as I gave this research to Mick a while ago. Talk soon kind regards Dianna |
