This is a museum that fully celebrates the stirring deeds of the Wars of the Roses and the English Civil War and much, much more. It is a fascinating place, set in a building that is the historic gateway to York. Even before entering the building the visitor is immediately taken over by a sense of walking in the steps of history for folk ranging from humble citizens and pilgrims to English Sovereigns including our present Queen, Elizabeth II, have for more than a thousand years entered York's magical city through the imposing stone Micklegate Bar Arch which replaced a wooden structure of around 1100.
The museum is the stuff that legends and ghostly stories from the annals of history are made of. It has a range of exhibits almost beyond compare, all of which will intrigue, beguile and fire the imagination. These exhibits cover three floors where you can acquaint yourself with soldiers, prisoners in the cells, see the heads of traitors and even explore how some of the interiors of the building looked when it was used as a family home between the years of 1196 to 1918. Interestingly, in the eighty years leading up to 1918 the Micklegate Bar was the home of serving Police Officers and the last to leave was the family of a P.C. Snowden.
Micklegate Bar Museum is a colourful, carefully thought out museum that imparts history in a gentle entertaining way. It has something for everyone from the most senior member of the family to the very youngest. There is a shop for the purchase of souvenirs.
