It seems like only yesterday that the beautiful QE2 was launched and brought into service by Cunard. I remember seeing this magnificent liner on countless occasions gracefully sailing past the Isle of Wight on her way to New York, full of excited holidaymakers. I also remember her joining the 'task force' in 1982, sailing to help in the Falklands conflict.

What a pity it is then to find she will be a floating hotel in Dubai. Will we ever keep any of our treasures? Or should we keep 'selling off ' everything that we had so much pride in? Why could she not be a floating hotel in our waters, would that be so outrageous?

I can't understand why our national heritage keeps dissappearing like this, can you?

That's so true and sad, Andy. We are reckless sellers with very little self awareness left; the buyer only needs to sit down and wait for us to do all the job.

Totally agree with both Andy and MG, we have lost anything and everything that was ever worth saving. Sadly, as you both point out, there is a whole long list of examples. Maybe warrants a new thread starting with our Gas and Electricity!

I don't understand it either Andy. You're right there is no pride or regard for the people who spent their time in making such a beautiful ship. How would they feel to know it won't be in their homeland anymore? Seems the whole world has become wasteful! And build something just to tare it down years later. Seems as though money rules everything! Undecided

I totally agree with everyone, and the sad thing is, when it gets to Dubai, it's going to be more or less gutted and rebuilt inside, even the funnel is to be dismantled and a glass penthouse suite put up there! As Andy said, whats wrong with us keeping it here in England and using it as a floating hotel ourselves?? That's yet another peice of our history gone down the pan! Yell

My Aunt Alice and Uncle Harold (my Dad's aunt & uncle) used to go on the QE2. They were our rich relations. We picked them up from Southampton once after a QE2 cruise. They kept us waiting 3 hours and my parents were getting worried and when they came off they said they had been having food and drinks with the captain. On the way back my Mom said we should stop for food and my aunt said she was far too full! My Mom was less than impressed!

It was a fabulous ship - I have a photo of it somewhere I took at that time when I was about 13. I'll have to look it out!
