Hi Ruth and enjoy your celebrations. A married man with a number of daughters could nearly face financial ruin after the King decided to tax hair powder. It probably wouldn't have got the popular vote over yourside, so they probably gave it a miss.

but, maybe it should be a two day holiday to allow New York to catch up, trying to spoil the party for everyone else way back then, obviously delaying the firework celebrations planned for after. Smile

What day did Independence actually happen?

Paul,
If I am not mistaken America's independence was actually declared by the Continental Congress on July 2, 1776.  It was The document justifying the act of Congress (Thomas Jefferson's Declaration of Independence) was adopted on the fourth, as is indicated on the document itself, which is, one supposes, the cause for all the confusion. As one scholar has observed, what has happened is that the document announcing the event has overshadowed the event itself.

 Ruth,
I have seen "John Adams" and it was spectacular...well worth seeing. I hope you enjoy it when you get the chance.Laughing

Happy 4th America!  And thank you to all our British friends for not holding it against us! LOL! Laughing

Happy 4th to you too, Diana, and to you too, Sue H. and to Roses who started the thread!  John Adams is on in 15 minutes, Diana.  But I can't possibly sit thru the whole thing, so I'll have to play catchup with the reruns.  Right now they're running a 24 hr. Twilight Zone marathon in TV land.  Doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo.  lol
