I came in to take an look at the Christmas snow pictures, I spent this morning in tears watching the grandmother"s house not far from me in full panoramic news film burning over an over again last night, of the little girl I raised. It's been empty for some time, they got kicked out when granny passed on. I knew something was up..I saw granny recently and she's passed over. She has come to me twice, as if to say.."Go see Kasey"..she could use your help right now....give her stabilty..and sense of security. but right now I don't know where she's at..so I guess this last time was because of this house fire...it took everything, the huge barn and the three story farmhouse. I watched those flames barreling out the widows and remember the good times we had standing upstairs and cleaning it up so the girls could make it their bedroom. Very old family here in town. All gone now. Some times the quiet snowflakes in times of trouble can give one an "sense of peace" from the maddening world. I look at the houses all dressed up for the Holidays and think of the laughter and the stuff cooking and the fire crackling in the fireplace. I can remember that going on here in my own house before. I can remeber the first time the grandkids sang to me.."Grandma got ran over by an reindeer" as an surprise. They were laughing, had the help of an CD to do it. then they put on thier little reindeer horn headbands....looked silly too!

I'd make sure the bits that mattered were still in the bag and I'd be out the door like a long dog!

All of our important papers are in a fire safe. So I don't have to worry about them. But my pictures aren't. I would want to grab them and my cats. The rest would be how much time I had to get in without smoke inhalation.

About four years ago the house directly across the street from mine caught fire. The fire fighters managed to douse it and no people were injured but two pet cats died.  After that I went out and bought those "Save my pet in case of fire" stickers that reflect light and put one on the outside of each of my doors. My only thought was, if that had been my house on fire, what would I have done? The answer is grab Merlin and get the hell out!

Now that my Merlin is gone the only thing I would grab would be my purse as it has the only things I would really need, i.e., drivers license, credit cards, car keys, etc.

That is my worst fear...fire!! All I would care about is my girls and my cat and dog. That's it.  Now if I knew I had to be evacuated (I live in a condo and if another unit was on fire) and had time  I would grab some clothes for each of us and Erins favorite stuff animal and Sammie's favorite blanket.

Bill,

i lost my home to an arsonist, lost everything,,,except, grabbed my wallet cell phone and charger,a gym bag with a few clothes, some family pics, that was all i had time for, this happened back in the fall of 2004.

That's awful Rick. A similar thing happened to an old work colleague of mine. He came out of his flat with nothing just wearing his underwear as he was in bed at the time. The landlord had insulated the walls with tin foil so he was lucky to be alive. My friend up the road from me also had a fire but they were out. So many things had to be thrown out that did survive because of the cancer risk.

Without a doubt after the obvious (Terry and the boys) I would get out Sooty, Doody & Gee, their important teddy bears. None of them have ever slept without them and we have had some near misses when they have all nearly been lost in the past.
