Solid relationships are the relationships that are held together by an external force, mainly God. If your relationship does not have that as its foundation, it will be soon to crumble.

Above is the quote in full. Do you agree or disagree and why?

Personally, I disagree. I consider myself a very spiritual person, but I think that if you are basing the solidity of your relationship on any external factor, it is doomed to fail.

Hello Diana,

Thats an interesting question which I think will be answered in different ways depending upon one's spirituality or religious commitment. My answer is that solid relationships are held together because the participants like and admire each other, and any setback is usually resolved because of the mutual liking and friendship.

Hi Ray!  Yes, I think you are right about the many different answers. It should prove to be an interesting thread, if everyone participates.

I agree with your assessment to a point. In addition to mutual liking and friendship, I would add commitment and trust. Commitment to each other and to doing whatever it takes to protect the soft inside of your relationship against outside forces that would threaten it.

After 43 years of being married to Anna I add the following in response to what I also believe will throw up some interesting comment. When we first met I thought I loved her (Watership Down.......phew!!) but in fact I now realize it was only lust. However, 43 years later I now love Anna and wouldn't want to be with any other. Well umm, err...

Hi Ron,

Keep you eyes closed and duck! lol Yes to me, without a basic simple liking for each other, it does not work. Long after the first passions die, the friendship and fondness are really what cements the relationship I think

I think it depends on what you interpert as "God".  What ever religion you follow, even new age spiritual things, its all based on the same principals....love, trust, honesty, and a willingness to live a good life and to do go to others. If you use all of these in a relationship coupled with being physically attracted to your partner then I think you have a great chance of making a solid relationship.

That's just my tiny take on it all.

LOL! Better get out those boxing gloves and wear the head gear to bed tonight Ron!

Again, I do agree with you wholeheartedly Ray. Even lovers who are also the best of friends can get on each others nerves after a while. LOL! There are moments when you won't like each other much less love each other, and those are the times when you fall back on your commitment to make it work. You are right, as long as the underlying friendship is intact, you can weather the temporary storms that come to port.
