The Icelandic volcanic cloud that has grounded flights in europe has meant that many people who have taken easter school holidays abroad have been stranded with no firm date of return. Many are trying to get home traveling overland by public transport rail or car hire. However I've just heard that a party of British schoolchildren on a weeks holiday in India were 'thrown' out of an hotel because they had outstayed their week. A french couple staying there were threatend with arrest when they were coaght taking bread out to feed the children. The hotel had held onto there passports so they couldnt leave. It's just been anounced that the Royal Navy is being mobilised to try and pick up someof the 150,000 stranded british travelers. Can I through our POE website appeal to anyone abroad that can offer help to stranded passengers to please do so at minimal cost? thank you POE members |

They were in a no-win situation, but its cost the economy £millions. |

Airport, it looks like they are going to be flying here soon....yes, I wonder how come some of luxury line passenger ships didn't come in to major "ports" of entry for passengers. |

The 'bottle kneck is the port of Calis, to cross over the English Channel to Dover in England. The 'tunnel' trains and the Ferries are coping with the extra demand, but the ports couldnt cope with extra ships at tha point. The Royal Navy has sailed down to Northern Spain, basicly to pick up 300 British soldiers flown in there from returning from Afghanistan, they will also pickup stranded Brits from ther also untill full. I think some holiday firms are using cruise ships instead of airlines to get their passengers back home. you will apreciate that brits are born global travelers and take the opertunity to travel abrouad at least once a year so this 'shutdown has caught all the Easter holidaytravelers out. A lot of these were school teachers and pupils so it has affected the start of the Spring/summer term which is traditionaly exam time. |

Madrid has been designated as a european 'hub' for continental flights getting back to Europe as the flights to the UK and northern Europe are still banned from flying. Many travelers are stranded there trying to get up the the northern French channel crossings. A lot of these travelers are being ripped off by taxi companies, buses and rail, hoteliers and just about everyone out there. They now are left with no money to survive on .They are being charged 3 and 4 times the normal rates, example £1000 plus a day car hire etc. Organisations cant fly into Spain to try to organise evacuation so its up to those already out there to help us do this. One of Spains main economies is from British tourism and if Spain continues to rip us off I'm sure it'll be a long time before some of these travelers will be back to Spain with their holiday spending money. The stranded passengers arent after charity, just compasion and assisstance. This situation could go on for weeks. If any british ex-pats living out in Spain and reading this can get help in any way, please do so. |

You may remember that he and a crew took one of his empty jets up last week to test for possible damage caused by volcanic ash He is said to be loosing £millions a day on grounded aircraft. Is this another example of him putting cost before safety? I hope all land OK but should one 'not make it' due to engine failure and lives are lost he should be 'hung, drawn and quartered! |

HMS Albion left Santander in northern Spain carrying more than 450 troops returning from Afghanistan and about 280 holidaymakers. Among those on board were Stanley Johnson, the father of Tory London Mayor Boris Johnson, who was held up returning from a trip to the Galapagos Islands. Mr Johnson senior said he was "absolutely thrilled" to be on his way back to Britain, adding: "You could say it is a bit of Dunkirk spirit." Surprising that while ordinary families with little money left, were left stranded by the ship in Spain, David Camerons school chum's wealthy father got a place onboard!. |
