I plan on having a bit of cider with my meal today, James, but if I have a red nose, it will be on account of allergies.

What charities benefit by Red Nose Day?  Do you get pledges, like a pound for every hour you wear your red nose, or something like that?

Hello Ruth,

Red nose day is an annual fundraising event for the benefit of various charities and good causes within Great Britain and Africa.

It is organised by a registered charity body known as "Comic Relief" and was originally conceived by several British comedians some 25 years ago.

It has now grown to a huge annual event preceded by a week of laughter and fundraising by many, many people up and down the country including well known showbiz celebrities, radio and tv personalities etc. Even institutions like banks and supermarket  chains become involved and often raise huge sums of money.

Soft, spongy red noses can be purchased in almost every large store or petrol station and are worn in fun as a display of your support, with the proceeds of each sale also going into the charity fund.

The week usually culminates with a day of comedy sketches and general fun entertainment on the BBC television channel with the total amount of funds raised being counted and announced.

There are two web sites available for info -

I love Red Nose Day, here ....and it is supported well, year after year. It's similar to the Lions Club in America doing their charity day....as they support so many charities in america, as well. Red Nose Day is a good thing...and much fun.

Toby and Beth, I fully understand and accept what you say, but there are plenty that are wealthy beyond our wildest dreams that don't make any kind of donation whatsoever. It's how they manage to keep their money, because they rarely give a damn about anybody other than themselves!

Those of us who do give to charity, albeit small in comparison to what some could give, find it hard to survive, let alone give yet more away.

If anybody wants to make a donation, give anything at all to POE on Red Nose Day, that also would be gratefully received and you would be able to see the benefit in due course, but no, it seems we have to be b....y stupid, dress up, cause hold ups on the roads etc...

My money will stay in my pocket!

Hi Ron,

Oh dear lol, I hope my post hasn't been taken out of context. I wasn't touting for this charity, it was simply a light hearted notification of the upcoming event.

I know what you mean though Ron, I sometimes feel that I'm being tugged every which way with so many charities constantly seeking donations. I can't even visit the supermarket without a collector rattling a money tin under my nose! Open a magazine, switch on the TV and there they are, not simply requesting "a donation" but outlining the amount they would like you to donate each month!

Maybe James has the right idea? Decide upon your favorite worthy causes and stick to them regardless.

Having said that, I guess I will still be sending them a small donation and hopefully it will help to reserve me a nice spot "upstairs" later on.. lol.  Oh and while I'm posting it, I'll stick a few humbugs in the post for ya Ron... lol  (Ha Ha, no offence mate!)

Toby, thats what posting in the forum is all about, different opinions and general good hearted banter. I think James has the right approach and we also have 'favourite' charities and yes, the supermarket entrance is always rattling the bucket.

To take this discussion a little further, perhaps the Government should distribute ALL of the money that it gives away to other countries/organizations to the people, we in turn could then decide exactly where our money goes, after all we live in a democracy don't we?

And we really are intelligent people aren't we? lol

What do you think POEsters?
