What was the first record you ever bought, how old were you, and was it a 45, LP, CD, 8 Track, etc?

I also copied the ones I still wanted onto CD and the hard drive. Its the way to go.

The first record I bought was "Hits of the Blitz" by Dame (not then she wasn't) Vera Lynn. It was an LP.

My collection comprises 78s 45s LPs and some 10 inch 78s which my grandpa brought with him to SA in 1919. Some singers most of you wouldn't have heard like Richard Crooks. I also originals of Stanley Holloway doing "The Lion and Albert" and "Three ha'pence a foot." Must be quite valuable now I think.

My first record was bought in September 1959, the day after my father bought a second hand record player from a pawn broker golfing friend. I’d saved up 10/6 for the Buddy Holly EP “Listen To Me” and rode on my bike to the nearby record shop wanting to put something of mine on the turntable. Well, the record was not in stock but the girl behind the counter pointed me over to a rack of records. She was nice and I well recall her wearing one of those dresses with a hoop under, the ones that gave thirteen year old boys like me increased heart rates when the girl in question sat down forgetting the hoop! Anyway, I came away with Connie Francis singing the upbeat “Lipstick On Your Collar” with the teenage angst ridden “Frankie” on what was then called the flip side. It cost me 6/4 which left me at least with some change. Soon bought the Holly disc which like all me 45s, I still have.

The next time I went to the local shop, the nice girl had gone, the suit clad manager in her place. He clearly hated Rock ‘n’ Roll and when I approached the counter to request a Chuck Berry or Gene Vincent record he would glare at me, take a deep intake of air, then sigh as the almost threw the offending disc onto the counter. I daresay if I’d popped in and forked out £1-10-6 for Frank Sinatra’s “Songs For Swinging Lovers” which was always on display, he’d have patted me on the back and called me “old chum” or something equivalent! Imagine anyone bringing out a disc now including the words “swinging lovers”. The mind boggles!

Needless to say, I started buying my records at NEMS in Liverpool which was run by some guy called Brian Epstein who even had IMPORTED records by Chuck, Gene, and Bo! Teenage bliss.

I'd probably enjoy it now!

Lending records was always a dodgy thing to do. I've got 24 Hours From Tulsa and goodness knows where it came from.

Anyway another summertime record:

Sunny Afternoon by The Kinks.
