The disaster was in 1846. East Wheal Rose had one of the largest pumping engines to work a Cornish mine- it had a 100 inch diameter cylinder but this was installed in the 1880s. Harvey's of Hayle ( one of the leading engine builders of Cornwall ) built the engine that worked in East Wheal Rose but only after it worked Wheal Vor and thenit worked in North Wales before returning to Cornwall at East Wheal Rose. The Largest beam engine built was also by Harveys of Hayle and that one was put to work at Cruquius in Holland where it it used to pump dry the land reclaimed from the sea- the diameter of that engine was 144 inches. Oh and Zebedee is the narrow gauge locomotive that pulls the train that takes visitors to East Wheal Rose. Edited by: Vince Hawthorn at:20th April 2014 17:07 |
