Wyre (district) Lancs. A modern adoption of the Lancs. river-name Wyre, perhaps of Celtic origin and meaning ‘winding river’. Piddle being derived from the evocatively-titled Piddle Brook which runs through the village.

hey Barb, thats my borough, the river Wyre is just 5 minutes drive away heres a picture of the Northern Ireland Ferry leaving the Wyre estuary at Fleetwood

Are there actually palm trees in England??  how strange!  that seems so tropical, not something I'd expect to see.  As a midwesterner, I've only seen them in Florida and New Orleans (and believe it or not, New York City, in the Winter Garden!)

Thanks for the information Barbara. Will have to look for Piddle Brook!

Yes Fawlty Towers was set in Torquay Ruth. John Cleese is just like my business partner Martin!

We have lots of palm trees here Norajean - there is one growing in garden of my new house- if i ever get there! They tend to be hardy varieties this far north but Devon and Cornwall have lots - as do some of the Scottish islands which enjoy good weather because of the Gulf stream eg. Arran.

That was always a surprise to me, Stephanie.  I hope you get your palm tree soon.

of course we have palm trees here Norajean especialy on the south coast, although I have to admit they arnt native. The gulf stream warms our shores and the jet stream our air, but we do get cold wether when the wind blows from the east or north. The privailing wind is usualy from the north west from the altlantic which is why we get rain but if it blows from the south its very warm.
