We had the usual collection of sparrows, bluetits, pigeons, robin ( of course),collered doves, common gulls, blackbird AND a parakeet. |

Mum did the RSPB bird count a couple of weekends ago. I keep wondering about joining but I've just this week paid for the NT for us both. Where did the parakeet come from I wonder ? Someone's pet I expect and they'll be worried sick. |

Every day they fly over in groups with their squeeky squark and fly back the other way in the evening and often stop off at gardens with feeders for a pit stop. One rumour is that Jimi Hendrix let a pair go back in the day but I take that with a pnch of salt. There are a number of theories how they settled but not sure of the basis. There is a page on the RSPB web - " Ring necked parakeet" and they are green. Thanks for the help tonight, better dive off now, back up at 6.30 in the morning. |

Some interesting reading there and quite an education. I now understand why the section of the Mole where the kingfishers nest is not able to be accessed at all. The Schedule 1 license is not handed out ad lib, one has to earn the right to be permited to be granted one with skill, knowledge and empathy with the natural world. If a Schedule 1 bird lands in your garden , no problem but respect for your subject still applies and one should NEVER startle the subject- it could still be caring for young back at the nest and the young would suffer if the parent is frightened and abandons the nest. The watchword here is RESPECT so I think a few trips to the Nature reserve with it's hides is my project for 2015. |
