Welcome Alan! I like Lyn missed this one. Hope you enjoy the site. I am from the Black Country and some of my ancestors were also miners in the pits around here.

A big thank you to everyone for the wonderful welcome.  I've just got in sfter a History Group meeting.  I had to go because I founded the group, so it might have looked a little bad otherwise.  As soon as I get time, I'm going to do some serious browsing on the site.  It's the old, old story: so many places: so little time!

I'll get to see England yet - without leaving the computer!

Not exactly! We both have hospital visits tomorrow for X-Rays and Ultrasound Scans to see if they can finally resolve our problems. We can but hope and pray for a good result in each case. You take care Ruth, and with luck we will update you all in a few days with a message to say it was all in our mind!

Ron, I hope all goes well for you and Anna at the hospital. Will keep you in prayer.

Hi Alan, welcome to POE. I am somewhat of a newbie too. Unfortunately one of those Americans! LOLLaughing

Ha! I made it first  .

Sorry Alan, just a bit of friendly rivalry going on to be the first to greet newcomers.

It's great to have you here.. We really are a friendly little bunch of people, a few on the mad side, but we tolerate them.

Looking forward to getting to know you through your posts and pictures.

That's good news Sue.  If you're all mad I should fit in easily!  Thanks to you and to everyone for the splendiferous (??) welcome.

Thanks for the welcome.  I've seen some of the great pics you've posted.  Isn't it just about impossible to find a new view of Durham Castle or Cathedral?  So many people have already been there and clicked the shutter that I think it's all been done before.  Doesn't put me off, though!

We're really lucky to live in such a beautiful area, where we're surrounded by so much history, aren't we?

We all agree of course Alan, a truly amazing website but don't forget that it's us 'nuts' who make it, so as my mate Peter says....join in soon Alan. Oh, by the way....welcome!

As for that Sue H getting in first with the welcome AGAIN, well beggars belief! An American gets in first AGAIN.....Thinks, that'll get her going (She reckon's she's not American Alan, but lives in Nevada eh?)....yeah!!!

Just a thought Alan, of all those that you speak to about POE, how many have signed up to the forum or posted pictures? Why not let us know?

I'm not sure yet Ron, but I'll go to work on it.  It would be interesting to find out how many have taken a look, and how many have signed up or are hoping to soon.  This site has everything!  Great pics, loads of informative articles, and the nicest people on the planet!

Thanks for the welcome.

Hi, Alan. Welcome to POE. I am not one of the mad ones, never mind what the others might say. He he he. But what I would like to know is, how come that lot from America get to welcome people on here first?

I come from a mining family too. My father moved to London to make sure I didnt have to go down the pits.

Now that you have introduced yourself, dont forget to come into the forums for a chat. We are like an extended family. Complete with all the name calling. All in fun though. Lol

Thanks for the welcome Peter.  A lot of the first miners to coe to Spennymoor In the 1840's were from Wales, so one of the first streets of houses built was named Welsh Street.  The Iron workers came mainly from Ireland and drank in (unregulated) pubs with names related to the industry, like The Ironworks, The Steam Mill and The Puddlers Arms.

We'll have to swap mining stories sometime.
