So how about some ACTUAL suggestions?  I have 3 friends in Nottingham, Luton and Sheffield --- I'm told they're all fairly close.  (Another is in London, which is easy, of course.)

Do these not count as north, then? 

And as I said, I plan to spend a good deal of time in Cornwall/Devon...

I will look up some maps and get my bearings a bit better, but I am looking for ideas for things to see between these two areas.

I am easily derailed by good pubs, too...

The Eagle and Child (aka The Bird and Baby) in St Giles, Oxford will take you back to before the USA was born Joni. They have been serving beer in this pub since 1650! It's well worth a visit, so how's that for history?

It also happens to be the pub where 19 men known as the 'Inklings' met at least once a week, which included C S Lewis, J R R Tolkien and Charles Williams for example to discuss each other's written works!
