Shillingstone in Dorset The swallows arrived in early April this year and are out until dusk each evening. They have already renovated their annual nest up in the garage loft, with mud from the brook. Shillingstone in Dorset The packhorse bridge at Fifehead Nevill, situated between Shillingstone and Hazelbury Bryan. The single-track lane, taking (optimistic) motor traffic, runs through the River Divelish, by way of a ford. This can be risky if the river is in flood, the posts indicate the depth. If they are half covered, unless you are in a fair-sized tractor forget it, there are alternative routes into Hazelbury Bryan. A favourite spot for highwaymen in the past? Shillingstone in Dorset Night Hunter; in this case a Barn Owl. There are a number of species of owl in the Shillingstone area. As well as the Tawney and Little owls that frequent Cookwell and the forestry plantation at Conygar Coppice, a pair of Barn owls nest at Bere Marsh. All of these species can occasionally be seen, at dusk in the trees leading down to the river Stour, by the bird hide on the North Dorset Trailway. Although nocturnal, the Barn Owl is frequently seen in fading daylight.
