Stour Valley Summer Speckled Bush-cricket (Leptophyes punctatissima). There has been a large number of these in the garden this year. They are normally most prevalent in a wild patch by the brook, although this one turned up on my workbench in the loft? Stour Valley Summer, Shillingstone. Verbena Bonariensis seems to thrive in this part of Dorset. This particular plant measures over six foot in height. The small, tightly packed flower heads on the tall stems, attract a large variety of butterflies. This Green-veined white (Pieris Napi), seems to be keeping an eye on me during its' brief visit to the plant. Stour Valley Spring, Shillingstone. The Shillingstone area of The Stour Valley, has a few of these dark brown hen Pheasants. They are known as 'Melanistics' and are a mutant of the normally light brown version. This one thinks it's a Chaffinch and has become far too familiar with the garden bird feeder. Stour Valley Spring, Shillingstone. A panoramic view across the Blackmore Vale. The east end of Shillingstone is in the right mid foreground, Child Okeford centre ground, and Shaftesbury on the central horizon. Hambledon Hill on the right, is an Iron Age Hill Fort and as well as being an ancient monument, it is also a nature reserve managed by English Heritage. Melbury Down beyond, is owned by the National Trust. The chalk grassland here supports large butterfly populations, including very large numbers of Chalkhill Blue, and a colony of Silver-spotted Skipper.
