Poor Ruth - still waiting for Peter to rise and give you your answer.  A humbug is a strong chewy minty sweet - don't forget we're still talking about a spoonerism!.

Seems like we all got sidetracked here.  About spoonerisms - when my daughter was about eight years old a neighbour gave her a bag of humbugs.  She came back home but humbugs was not the word she used!

Hi Jo:  What was the word your daughter used?  The strong, chewy, minty sweet - would that be kind of like salt water taffy?  Don't know if you have that over there.  They sell it in shore towns, so I'd imagine if they have it over there, Cornwall would be one of the places it's available.

Sorry i wasnt on yesterday. I was really bussy.

Ruth, ahumbug is a sweet that tastes like cough medecine. Loved them when I was a kid but not now.

I think Denzil is getting confused with salt fish. Filleted cod, dried in salt. You have to soak it over night to get rid of the salt and soften it up. Otherwise its like a plank of wood. But when cooked propper, it tastes fatastic.
