Sheb Wooley, "The Purple People Eater," about an unidentified flying creature, sold three million copies in 1958 and became a No. 1 pop hit. The song, for which he wrote the words and music, had people across the country singing, "It was a one-eyed, one-horned flying purple people eater."
Spot on Wolf.  There was also an English hit version by Don Lang & his Frantic Five (of Six Five Special fame).

It was written in 1961 by Gerry Goffin and Bary Mann, and it was Mann who recorded the original version.  The British chart hit was by the Viscounts in September 196, but stayed outside the top 20.  A cover version by Showaddywaddy charted sometime in 1982, I think, but I don't believe it got any further than the bottom section of the (then =) top 40.

Could be fine if it doesn't rain.

Tie a piece of string on the gate post.

If string is wet........ it;s raining.

If string dry........... it's fine.

If string swaying........ it;s windy.

If string stiff.......... it's frosty

If string missing........ some blighter stole it. Wink
