My dad used to work construction, and so he would come home pretty dirty from work.  He would tell us that the dirt on his clothes and his hands and under his fingernails was clean dirt. He never explained what he meant, and, at least for me, it was only after I grew up and had to go out and work to pay bills that I understood what he was saying.

I remember my father once sitting on an armchair in front of a roaring fire, with his feet propped up on the mantel-piece. He said to my mother 'Move my legs Joyce....I'm burning!'

When we were kids holes in socks were known as “spuds” I can remember my Gran stretching our socks over her (was it called a mushroom or a stool ) in order to darn the “spuds” in our socks. She would use wool she had kept from old worn out jumpers or pullovers.

Yes Ruth, I heard that one as well. I think clean dirt is from honest work, dirty dirt is from dishonest stuff.

Mick, as a kid I always had spuds in my socks. And the thing that was used to help with the darning was a mushroom.

Did you also have to clean your plates because there were so many starving children in China?  lol

I remember that one Ruth. I also remember telling my mother to "send it to them" in response, and then came the second saying when I started crying after she whacked me for being flippant..."I'll give you something to cry about!". LOL!
