He would tell us that the dirt on his clothes and his hands and under his fingernails was clean dirt. He never explained what he meant, and, at least for me, it was only after I grew up and had to go out and work to pay bills that I understood what he was saying.

She would use wool she had kept from old worn out jumpers or pullovers. |
