My uncle use to like to go down there for his vacation every year to see them, he is an Larkins...if he's still around. He preceeded me with the heart problems, and my great uncle before him...the one that was an "Shiriner" in the Masonic Lodge. I think we all just plainly work to hard, to tell you the truth of things. I use to get an "antique paper" one time with an family name in it also from back east...linked with historical or genealogy knowledge also. I've heard the grand daddy of them all is the Route 66 "Yard Sale", covers half the nation state wide each year...when it comes to selling things. But I always see on HGTV in California where you can go there and pick up old anything they happen to have, and I sure do wish we had something like that here in Portland.... Goodwill and Salvation Army doesn't sell things like building materials. Both are more clothing and small items. I watched an woman decorator one time take an old half window pane and hang it down from the celing behind an sofa for like an room divider, but one you could see through also.I've also seen old doors made into huge coffee tables also. Milk cans made into bar stools. Chairs nailed to the wall to hold potted plants and watering cans and such stuff...outside. A person can only get so many nick knacks and then they want something big to set them on. They seem to be running out of the collectible old tea cups...type people use to get and put in china cabinets. It's easier to find all kinds of "New" stuff these days, then the old stuff at times...but of course they are closer to the "new prices" of today also. Oh, to answer your question, Live outside of Portland,Oregon..USA. Yes, I see an auction place opened up recently not to far from here. Will have to see how they do this year...at least its an bit more country then some of the stuff they got going out here. There seems to be an conspiracy against country folks being "country" for the most part...but I notice the people with the big houses, even if they are new, still have and grow their gardens. |

I am kind of liking some of these "box" ideas in ways....you put an group of boxes together and then put an light behind them for wall pieces...to cast an soft glow around the edges of them as they are all nailed together...painted. They almost have an brick look...but then an bit 3 -dimensional at that..as they off-set an few of the boxes slightly so they have texture with each other as an whole. I recently saw one done in white paint, and placed an inch from the base board, and the light was inside the base board..and they hung it on an light gray background wall...in an huge diningroom. My sister in-law has that kind of long livingroom wall to deal with above her sofa. But so do I now in ways. One time I mentioned to an gal that had built her new huge house, and had an double tall wall, that the castles use to hang tapestries..many of which are now in museums...well from that she got the idea to do Macreme'...so she founf her an place that sold the twine and yarns in bulk..and she made her what most people would call short of an huge rug wall hanging of just "bands" of soft various colors. It looked really nice in the end. She chose more natural colors of the land in general, muted tones. Since she had an loft, with an curved stairway pole coming down, there were many things she couldn't of hung threre for fear of someone hitting it on the way to the bottom..it worked otu really good for her. The yarn/twine was an lot less buying it in bulk also. I have seen an lot of things made in my day that were indeed most interesting. |

Yesterday was a comedy of errors though as you would expect from us - the "neighbours" were having satellite TV fitted so there were vans, cars etc blocking the road, when I was showing them one of the trees we saw someone had stuck a traffic cone in it and as they were going some yobs were doing a noisy dog walking tour of the estate! Both couples said they loved the house - we will see! Took Sol's little friend to Cosford RAF museum on Saturday - all 4 boys had a great time. It is such a great attraction - and it's free entry. The only cost is a small parking charge (and something from the shop as you can imagine with 4 boys!) |
