I suppose to anyone from UK for example the Winters would be very mild, in fact family and friends who have visited walk around in summer clothes while we pile on the jerseys and "long johns".  The nights and early mornings can be below freezing but during the middle of the day and it get really warm, so we always have the wrong clothes on!  The layered look is very functional in Winter.  The houses are not built for the cold and we do not have central heating/air conditioning as a norm.  But I do have my electric blanket and wouldn't be without itSmile I think it really depends on what you are used to living with, the body seems to adjust to the warmth but not the cold. Oh and the big thing is that in this part of South Africa we rarely have any rain in the Winter, only summer rainfall.

My brother-in-law worked in South Africa most of last year Cathy - he works for IBM. My sister thought about moving out there so that she could see more of him. He is in Stockholm at the moment though.

South Africa is an amazingly beautiful country, with every time of terrain from mountains (which do get snow) to gorgeous beaches, woods and forests, deserts, and of course the big one - the National Parks like the Kruger full of animals in their proper place! I think what I miss the most though a the sense of history, there are few really old buildings and villages, a few dating back  to 1700's, but the vast majority of those early buildings have been erased

Where in South Africa are you (you don't need to answer if you want to keep it private)?

Hello Sue! In a little village about 40 kms from Pretoria, 100kms from Johannesburg, about 680 kms from Durban and 1500 kms from Cape Town, in what is called the Highveld region.  Today between 16.30 and 17.00 the temperature was still 100oC (about 40oF), but we now have a huge thunder storm brewing (which is quite normal for this time of year when it is this hot) and then everything electrical gets turned off!! So can't even chat to all you folks then.  But what a relief the rain is when it comes. I am sure that is far more information than you wanted!! So now you can share what your area is like, please.Smile

Hi Sue, the Bluff is in Durban area which as you will see from previous post is nearly 700 kms away (somewhere about 440 miles? not too sure of the conversion rate), nice area, close to the south coast beaches, sub tropical climate, but I find the humidity there difficult to cope with, we are used to much drier air up here.

Well Good Morning/Evening to all Poe-rs, a bright, newly-washed morning here, the best time of the day when it is still relatively cool.  May you all have a wonderful dayLaughing
