It is indeed a sad state of affairs regarding today's children.  I too recall playing outdoors all day with my friends, getting enormous amounts of exercise in the sunshine.  Granted, in those days we didn't have all the electronic stimuli we have now.  But even when my children were young (they were born in the 80's), their screen time was very limited and they spent a lot of time outdoors playing.  And what's more, they enjoyed it! They never were overweight either, as so many children are today.  Yes, they were allowed trips to McDonald's on occasion but these were balanced against wholesome food cooked at home or even in restaurants.  My children loved salad bars!  I disagree that it's more expensive to eat healthily than to eat so-called fast food, pre-packaged, processed junk. But it does take a wee bit of effort.

James,...you know what its like to walk even out in the country these days? Let's see...I use to do 5 miles an week on Saturday's and one mile an week Monday through Friday...and ou street is one of joggers and walkers every morning. There's this little black dog up the street...he follows you around hoping to bite you when your not looking. One day I watched two ladies coming down the street I asked them...how you get past the little black dog...one of them raises up an rolled up newspaper...and we all laughed...they went on walking....and around comes that dog following them...keeping hsi distance. I stood out int he middle of nowhere for over half an hour by Barlow High School not daring ot move an inch from an littl dog one time...making me change my route afterwards. I stopped going into town from "cougar" reports out in our area...and as for th elittle kids, they run in "gangs" out of safety to each other. But sometimes that can be an problem also...because those must "conform" to the older ones. We called the police one time seeing an weird numbered sign on our street next door to the neighbors facing down the street there..he said when he came out... that this as an "gang" related territorial sign. I said..I am not aware of any of the kids around here in an gang...he says maybe not be...but could be someone they know also...this sign says they can't walk down that street. So you thinkit's easy even out in the rural but residentual areas to tell your kids to play outside. Not to mention the hispanic problem. In fact last fall they broke into an house with an young 10 year odl girl there, and she hid under her bed and called police....while they were wipin gout the houses electronics...it was just an couple blocks from an High School up in Troutdale. We never had problems until up on glacier two rental houses aquired Hispanics...then it started...one husband was known for shootingoff his gun every timehe lost his temper...and of course we started having more burglaries...and of course they tened to want to bring all the relatives in anyway they could...we were so glad to see them leave...they had enough money accumulated they went out to the pristine residentual area near our town Golf Coruse and look down on us as if we are hype to making big bucks the easy way these days. Before they left they set off massive fireworks, caused my part wolf/dog to jump an 6 foot fence out of fear as he was picked up by animal patrol in the wilds and I think shot at one time as an young dog...that cost me an mint to get his hide back....they next to bankrupt the local church in the area an dgot our Government to build them an brand new one to cater to them instead. They are known in the area for thier kidnapping, rape, and killings...and sex dealings. They of course from that ususally have plenty of money...drive new fancy cars...and own an business or two these days...paid by loan made through the Government to "help" them. Those hom have grown up in town are not this way...these are the " new" comers for the most part....and not every one of those always fits into the criteria of all this mischief. Enough though we can't ignore it all going on.  So maybe I use to play outside all day...but I sure would not suggest it for these days...not unless your standing near by and ready to guard your kid from others. My son was the last group growing up where the kids could freely play outside..even then we had an system to look outside and see them at all times amoung us mothers. We just had to many new houses being built and to many new neighbors moving in and out to not know where our kids are at.

With one out of every 10 kids in the state of Oregon not having food to eat daily...the state set new rules with the Federal Government..and most kids now are fed both breakfast and lunch year around in our schools here...even when closed during the summer time....so everyone knows that they get something to eat daily. So if they get an dollar hamburger...or taco bell its not as bad as you might think. I have already supplied my son, his wife and all thier kids with bottles of vitamins. I don't worry about my grandson as he's in scoutting, even though young yet he should be into the outside activites here soon enough...he' shad his first weekend outtting now...and they have outdorr school amoung the public schools for an week around this age also.  This kid is an "electronics" kid by choice...he likes animals also...he likes more educational type things over activity based. The younger is more athletic by choice. Sissy is older now...and getting more feminie by nature...thank God. They all have played several years summers in Little League sports, an particpated with thier ATV group and cousins, they all drive them better then many adults do...they also spent one month last summer helping at 4-H camp (last two years)...as their mother was an teacher there also. They have an large field now with plenty of room to romp in...our basketball hoop is out at thier house also...and their bikes...and in the summer they are outside more then inside some days. I don't beleive in tossing kids out the door all day to play without supervison and scrutiny. But my daughter in-law has an nice long patio and an huge front picture window to see everything going on outside these days. Their cousins are two doors away if not the other kids in the area. They do not go outside at night for the animal sitings in the area. When they are outside most often they have thier labrador dogs with them. Here they use to grow an garden, here they have thier huge trampoline...and an huge swingset...we also have an boat...though we also teach "Scouts" in it also water sports and boating. Where they live now see's an lot more snow...I passed out new snow sleds this year for that as Christmas gifts. Oldest grandson needs to grow bigger this year...birthday is next week..

Society is junk food out of  lack of time to cook from working parents...but if the parents are working, they ususally have the money to by better food. My son and all his family have no weight problems. My hubby has no weight problem...and I work at my weight all the time....but its more then just eating junk food by far. We did an little experiment last year concerning my weight....and it proved one thing..there's something more then just the eating medically. He was never able to raise my "good" HDL levels even with increasing the medications four times in strength.,,he finally took me off them and at this time I did an one month course of daily excersie with the "Curves" program until I literally stomped my ankles into my feet. By the time I was done...and I was monitored through out daily.. they said maybe I had no metabolism working...but not sure what the problem was entirely. Told me at least  I wasn't gaining. See you next year...that was that. I use to walk constantly as I was also an part of Scout outtings when my son was in it. Now that I lost weight doing...to the tune of about 4 pounds every weekend...they were high school aged kids. I did then an 10 mile though with Kevin and my son one summer..but never the 20 mile and 50 mile hike. The last one is almost an survival skill besides an hike. I've done maybe some three summer camps at various times....they are one week long, my hubby has done them all..... My son has done them all growing up. Plus my son played football in high school. Younger little League Baseball...my hubby was an assitant coach to that. Plus he has had Golf lessons and ski lessons..both snow and water skiing. Music lessons...both vocal and instrumental. Then of course about 10 years or so of "Scouting" evry week an weekends.
