I know Davy's invention saved thousands of lives but not sure why he is humourous!

  No clues required, Sir Humphrey Davy is the correct answer and the humour reference is to his discovery of the anesthetic properties of nitrous oxide (laughing gas) . His statue stands looking down on Market Jew Street (the street he was born in) Penzance.

I should have known that one. My dad's family were coalminers in South Wales and they had quite a few Davy lamps of varying ages dotted around the house....How embarrasing ! ! !

Here we go then!

Born in Derbyshire in 1887 and died aged 92.  Amongst his most famous inventions were Grand Slam, Tallboy & Highball.  Vickers Armstrong manufactured those used as chastisement!
