We all get to have our cable lines torn out next week and replaced with new undergrond wiring,... I wonder if the Enviromental Protection Agency had anything to do with this..so again. I may be off line next week. Sid was also another neighbor's name around here....Sid Corrnett...whom married Joan Cornett....and his brother (Harlan) whom had the house up for sale..third house away from me an up an long dirveway for an million dollar couple of years ago. Harlan was from Springfield, MO..area of where my husband was from in his youth...Harlan had heart problems, but Harlan county, Kentucky is named after them in the area...and it is an site of an unique craft school tryin gto keep the old style of the "Ozark" mountain sytle alive...such as clogging, quilt making, preserving foods, making things apple cider, and sorghum molasses, butter..etc.. Where my hubby came from also wrote the "FOXFIRE" series of books an crafts of the olden days also. Alma and Harlan owned the ground this hosuing project was built upon many yearsa go...though I remember from years back..before we bought our house here....my mother when we were "kids" worked at Christmas in "Cornett's" five and Dime Store. That since gone and the city Historical Society referred to them as the "Cornuts" fro soem reason....Walnuts are an Industry of Lebanon, Missouri...I bought an Lazy Susan from one of the area wood shops many years ago, which I've heard since many of them went out of business. Lebanon is actually bigger then where I grew up (town wise) because of the "Lake of the Ozarks" and it's theme park of "Litle Abner" and "Dog Patch"...if they still have it any more....much of the area went into resorts and golf course these days. I understand that Joane's soneis now living with her...all the rest of the family has passed away now.I gave her some huge fresh tomatoes from my garden last year and she said she was going to savor them all by herself.. because she no longer grew an garden do to older age. It takes an "farmer" to know the difference between an true home garden tomato... and an store bought one....even if it says "field grown". I remember this area as an kid being all grass with cattle on it. She's right, when it heavily rained there was an surface creek ran across about the corner of where my house is right now. In my younger years...them an anothe rhouse near by was consider the wealthy of the area....but the street down from here was known of just good plain "country" folk also...oen reason I decided to buy here and the fact that we have some of the last of the "country" sized building lots here...average were 1/4 acre lots suppsosedly...something like 10,000 square foot lots. The houses around are newer...but not better. Depending what they do with the two Cornett houses will make an difference in the quality of life in this area. to me the people coiming in and never doing anything to keep up or maintain the yards has much do do with it's future. In some cases not much is needed done, in other cases, people had it and lost it through the owners of buying and selling...and in some case the people never finished what they started some 30 years ago on their own. The city has made bad choices for us...their idea is/was not in preserving the land out here...it was to earn "property taxes" off new housing. they did so right to the peoperty line of the county nowabout 1/2 an mile away...so we now have no "country" atmosphereany more. In 20 years...it will look like an older jammed up bunch of people trying to survive. by then it won't make any difference to most of us any longer...if we are even by then still around or alive. I also owe POE an check...and am wating for the next social security check to get the money to send off. Besides I just got back my email service to get POE's address again. I had an good time with my grandson's..besides the swimming. and what other I mentioned the other day, bke riding, and trampoline, we also had late night "chili dogs" on the back patio that they made...one grandson made his first "pancake" breakfast...as I helped him, and another help paint my fire pit screen and we built an small fire, recovered the tent because of drizzle that came in last night. I kept them inside the house after two cars showed up front the other night...one was an red pickup, the other an black newer car...I think they were "talking" but the gal in an turquiose top I noticed was putting it on..the driver of the small pickup wanted to leave...the other one didn't...they were out there maybe 1/2 hour because my other neighbor to the north doesn't turn on her proch light. So they were basically in an area under the big old oak tree. Car lights shut off most the time. Girls went up the street with the guys following and them cam eback down and left the way they came. I am more aware of these things since my son got his ATV's swiped one night...whcih my other neighbor seems to think could of been Atma's daughter by her first marriage, an party she was having...she left, she couldn't not afford to stay in the house...they have other relatives living in it now. It was not to nice an farewell gift to us...I never knew Brenda like I did the older Cornett's...Alma and Harlan..When we first moved in Joane's husband had an Ham Radio at thier house. They probably used it in the old days for emergencies in the winter. I go for now. Kind of taking an rest and cleaning form the kids being here. One of them didn't want to leave..wanted to stay another night. Other was ready to go back, but sounded like he wasn't to enthusiastic. It gave the the duaghter in-law an couple days to rest up in...but I doubt the boys are hard to work with...as all the kids get together in the field in an small group of trees an bit aways...they have an "fort" there they play in during the day and ride bikes. She can watch them from her front window quite easily. |
