I think it might be worth mentioning for our overseas friends that, after it opened in July 1981, it was the longest single-span suspension bridge in the world for 16 years, and still the longest---7,283 feet---in the world you can cross by foot. There's enough cabling in it to almost go twice around the world. A classic example of British design and engineering which even Jeremy Clarkson on Top Gear compared favorably against today's Rolls-Royce which is anything but, and now only screwed together in England from imported parts. |

I never tire of it though, but I wish they (the Humber bridge board) would scrap the £2.70 charge per crossing. Saying that, I paid £10.10 the other day to cross the Severn bridge (the original bridge). |
