Here is a super shot by Bill.

These shy and somewhat elusive little birds don't usually hang around to get there pictures taken, I'm thinking he was spying something very tasty in the river and not bothering to see Bill out there with his camera.

wow, there's a Kingfisher down by the stream here, i'd love to get a shot of it, but no way!! its hard enough to see it!!  but wow they are SPECTACULAR when you do!!

It looks like a black-headed gull with summer plumage.

It is indeed a Black-headed Gull Gemm. The males and females are practically identical, with the males being slightly larger.

This is a bird in it's breeding plumage, because his/her black head is chocolate brown.

Oh, and during the winter the black head is replaced by a white head with a black spot over it's ears.

Gemm and Sue are correct.  This is a Black-headed Gull in its summer plumage.  It only develops these markings between feb-aug each year then revert to its winter markings.  The bird in the picture is at least two years old.
