Greys Court House The House was originally a Norman Manor House which has been extended and updated over the centuries. The House as seen now is essentially Tudor with later Georgian additions and 20th century modernisations. It is now administered by the National Trust. The Great Tower and Cromwellian Stables, Greys Court The Great Tower (14th century), at the left of the picture, was once part of more extensive fortifications at Greys Court. Sadly, the top of the tower is no longer accessible to visitors, which is a shame, because a climb up the wooden stairs rewarded the adventurer with a superb view of the estate. The Cromwellian Stable Block (17th century), at the right of the picture, dates from the English Civil War, and is now often used to house art exhibitions. The stables are reputed to be haunted by the ghost of a pot-boy from the time of the occupation of the building by Cromwell's troops. Greys Court House The rooms are currently decorated with a Harvest Theme (for Autumn). The painting in the shot is of Sir Felix and Lady Brunner, the last owners of Greys Court before it was bequeathed to the National Trust. Painted Lady Butterfly at Greys Court The flowers at Greys Court attract many types of pollinators. This year (2019) there have been many more Painted Lady Butterflies than usual. Cromwellian Stables at Greys Court The Stable Block lies to the east of the main house, and dates from the 17th century. The building was used to garrison Cromwell's troops during the English Civil War 1642 - 1651. There are rumours that the building is haunted by a ghostly presence from that period. Swiss stained glass panel on the main staircase at Greys Court A group of 16th and 17th century stained glass panels are displayed on the main staircase at Greys Court. The panels are of Swiss origin, and almost certainly came to Greys Court through the connection with the Brunner family, who were of Swiss ancestry, and the last private owners of Greys Court. The Great Tower at Greys Court The Great Tower is the most prominent remaining part of the defences of Greys Court, and dates from the 14th century. A licence to crenellate Greys Court was given in 1346 to Sir John de Grey of Retherfeld (Rotherfield) by King Edward III. The Dower House at Greys Court The Dower House is attached to a fortified tower which would have been part of the defences of the original settlement on this site, which dates back to the 11th century. An inscription in Latin over the door of the Dower House reads 'Melius nil coelibe vita' (Nothing is better than the celibate life).
