Some places got 32 inches of snow, which became 5 foot drifts due to the wind - 80 MPH gusts and the same low barometric pressure as a Cat 2 hurricane. It was definitely one for the record books. And little Old Blighty, wow, this is my third winter on POE and I don't remember hearing about this much snow over there, apart from a couple storms last winter. That's how I learned a new British expression - gritting the roads. As for Phoenix where I am, it was a bit of cloud with bright spells and temp of 67°F. We could have worked on our tans on Christmas day. They're calling for rain by Wednesday and a hard freeze Friday morning. There will be snow up north in Flagstaff, but no snow here, thank God!

The flood waters are icy, and the fire dept. can't even get around to put out fires. Speaking of Boston, I had a Christmas card from Diana and she's OK. I just hope she's not near one of these flooded areas. |

I was thinking of doing the same here too Ruth, but the thought of frostbite put me off a bit. |

The dark patches you can see under the arches are soot deposits from an Ox Roast held on the ice when the river froze solid in 1883 or 1885 (the actual date is uncertain). The last recorded freezing of the river is 1895." Picture by Stephen Williams So it is more than 100 years since this river was last frozen!!! Must be mighty cold to freeze, what looks like, running water. |

I wonder when the last time was the Thames froze over in London? |

It appears that the Thames at Windsor and further upstream was last frozen over in 1963 for the period from Christmas to early March. Prior to that it was frozen in 1953, 1947 (which recorded the coldest February ever!) and 1940. Prior to that it was way back in 1896. Did some-one say something about "global warming"?? lol |

What a difference a week makes. Thursday, we had a ton of rain and the Flagstaff area had about a foot and half of snow. In Williams, Arizona, about a half hour west of Flagstaff, they had 30 inches. We had a hard freeze here in Phx the last two nights. I went outside the last two mornings to take some macro shots of the frost on the weeds. My fingers about froze this morning. It's lovely right now, about 60°F and sunny at 3 PM, 1/1/11.
