Ron, this is a dreadful story and I am so sorry to know that your family is going through this.  My grandmother had Alzheimer's and it's just the most dreadful of diseases. When she realized that she was ill she begged my grandfather not to tell the rest of the family because she was so ashamed. He lived with it and took care of her for a couple of years before it got to be too much and he had to call the rest of us in.

Eventually, he had to put her in a care facility and it broke his heart to do so. Ironically, she died only days after being admitted. He believed it was putting her in there that broke her spirit and felt responsible for her death. It was horrible!

Fortunately, all things considered, she didn't suffer for very long and she nor we had the chance to experience the shameful kind of conduct you are talking about.

My prayers are with you all.

Thanks for your support and prayers Diana, as always!

As you can see from the posts above I intend to gather information that relates to the way our loved ones are treated by so-called Carer's, and then attempt to destroy the cushy way of life and profiteering of the so-called 'Care Homes', the Company's, their Directors and Staff! Where proven guilty they should face a prison sentence for assault with personal injury claims to follow thereafter! Put simply, they need to be reminded that they have a duty of care towards all.

Collectively we may be able to do something about not only the disease that we all know about, a disease that has probably affected at least one person in every family on this earth (but likely called something else) but we may just also be able to stop the abuse with some high profile media coverage when in a position to do so. We probably all know somebody who has suffered yet nothing gets done to improve their quality of life, why is that? Remember, it could be me or you to suffer next, something must be done!

Your example is one that could be used also if you are happy to allow it to be quoted. Maybe you would wish to add something more, I don't know. Either way there is no hurry (well there is of course) but what I mean is you don't have to send it by return! I will for the time being collect such information as the people are prepared to provide and take it from there.

I will hopefully get something to you Ron within the next week and don’t worry it will be just the facts, I’m not a revengeful person anyway and if that’s how I have come across in these posts I didn’t mean to, I am still angry and it does upset me still but revenge is the last thing on my mind.

I feel I would just like to say that it’s not only care homes that our most vulnerable people get let down in but also in certain hospitals, I can only speak of our local hospital but we send residents into hospital when they injure themselves after a fall or are ill and they are almost always returned to us in a state, sore, dirty, unshaven in the case of our gents, one lady who was in hospitals for just a few days was returned to us catheterised, she was quite able to know when she needed the toilet, when I asked why she had the catheter I was told it was common practice because the nursing staff didn’t have the time to take people to the toilet and that it would be removed by the district nurse the following day. I know we are concentrating on care homes here but I can’t help thinking that our older folks get let down which ever way they turn.

That is shocking news Lyn B. Hospitals should do better, they all should do better.  My 'Dad' has been in and out of the John Radcliff Hospital, Oxford, many times over the past few years, and has received excellent care.

I do remember when my mum was in hospital (The Churchill), I was there visiting at meal time, she received the food of another patient, a diabetic patient, and that patient received my mum's food, complete with the sugars the diabetic was not allowed. Such mistakes could cause serious problems even death; especially in the aged and infirm.

I was living in the States when mum was at The Churchill, so I can't vouch for the care she received other than that one time. She passed away there though.

P.S. I notified the nursing staff about the food by the way. Just thought I'd clarify that.

My dad died of Alzheimers four years ago. It was a blessing when he died. Fortunately, from quite an early stage it seems the sufferer is blissfully unaware, apart from the occasional lucid moments. It's an appalling illness to witness, especially if it's a loved one. Life is cruel sometimes. He forgot me just when I didn't want him to.

It's usually down to money!!  bad pay bad workers, or poor education/training, cutting corners to save money, as long as they fill the relevant paper work in nobody in charge really seems to care. Its all about figures, everything for less money, as long as we can make it look ok,  waiting times in A&E, response times for us, it means nothing and certainly doesn't better patient care, what it does is makes people cut corners!  i hate paper work i really do, but it seems to be what everyone is interested in, if your good with paper work, you can cover up anything and make everything look good! its a shame it all seems to rely on this method.

That's so sad Andy. It's an awful illness for the relatives, so sorry you had to experience that.
