A distant willy-willy begins its dance Spinning rapidly in gypsy flamenco It gyrates before the sinking orb, Soundlessly, it kicks up heels of debris Shapeless, vacuous arms Clasped sensuously overhead. Exhausted then, its promenade over Disappears into dust from whence it came. Lone dingo howls its intentions A kill will be made Beyond the rabbit-proof fence Fifteen hundred miles of wire Stretched, from state to state No match for the hungry canine The desert now prepares to sleep, And there! A Taipan slithers Rattus villisissimus freezes Nervous contractions Submission to deadly venom. Darkness now, as bogong moths Hover around the camp light As dying embers cool. Time now to sleep... |
