I have had an awful few days - a virus called Anti Virus XP 2008 took over my computer!!! I had a dodgy e-mail which I deleted but it set off as soon as I deleted it! I'm using Martin's computer now - he has put most of it right now but I am not going to connect to the internet on mine until our computer consultant checks it out! It's put me back workwise so this is only a quick post!

Oh Stephanie that's awful! Doesn't it make you angry? To think that some people have nothing better to do with their lives than to spend their days thinking up ways to cause problems for other people.  I imagine these are people who just hate other people in general and feel the world owes them something.Yell

I can't remember exactly - said it was an e-card but I didn't open it I deleted it and as I deleted it it set off on it's own!!!Surprised I had another one on Martin's computer last month that popped up while my son was on webfetch. He wasn't even in a program as I was with him at the time. That one wasn't as aggressive though. Luckily I had already ordered a new computer. Martin has managed to get my work programs running and my computer consultant will check to see if we are rid of it. I'm not connecting it back up to the internet now though as with my work I have alot of sensitive information on there. Thanks for you sympathy Diana and Peter!

I had a warning from a friend about a new virus passed on via e-cards. There is no protection agains it yet. Even virus checkers dont spot it till it is too late. There are also, as you say, bogus virus checkers that are in reality viruses. You have to pay to get rid of them. I dont know if it would work for the ones that start when you delete them, but maybe marking them as spam would work. Just a thaught.

I never open emails or e-cards from people I dont know.  I hope you get your PC sorted. Good luck.

Because this little number XP Antivirus 2008 is scamware, and now they've made your PC a misery to run,and seems hell's own job to shift it, they now want you to pay them to remove what they installed on your machine, trying to hold you to ransom.
I'd be inclined myself to save all the files you wanted to, then re-install XP but others might have success other ways less drastic.

Thanks Peter, thanks Paul for your good advice. I think Martin has it sorted and Norton killed the viruses that came with it. I'm having a new PC anyway (strangely ordered 2 hours before this monster arrived!) and I already have 3 WD backup drives - one a permanent fixture next to the computer! With my job I have to have loads of security and backups. However this thing got through all of it!YellThe main problem is my old computer did not have much space left and so this program ceased it up completely but Martin managed to stop the processes etc etc. I moan about him all the time but I don't know what I'd do without him! We've worked together for 23 years now - longer than a life sentence!
