No one is forcing anyone to be celibate against their will. But even that is beside the point. Pedophilia is a deep psychological problem where otherwise (usually) healthy adults have a perverted sexual attraction to children, it exists irrespective of the outside environment. In other words, celibacy doesn't make you a pedophile.

As Ruth and others have said though, the behavior goes deeper than that and is not limited to the Catholic church. And there are of course many Catholic priests and nuns who are faithful in their spiritual walk and are equally appalled as we are. |

It's a shame though that once they discover their perverted tendencies, they don't repent and turn away from it or remove themselves from their position in the church and get help. It doesn't help either when their superiors cover it up rather than calling them out. |

Are they removed from their church or just shuffled off to another? Or does the Catholic church not want to tarnish their image by admitting what is happening and sending these priest to get help?? |

The general consensus among psychological professionals today is that pedophilia can not be cured. They don't know why. And as far as I am concerned it is one of the true definitions of evil out there. If you've ever heard a pedophile interviewed they are totally unrepentant. They believe that sexual contact with children is perfectly normal. It just makes you want to vomit! But that is the answer to your question; they don't repent or seek help because they don't think there is anything wrong with it. So true, Diana. |

I read an article once on a study where hundreds of adults, who as children had been sexually abused by priests, were asked if they had ever tried to tell anyone about the abuse. Almost without exception the answer was yes, they had told their parents, but the parents became angry at the child and accused them of being blasphemous attention seekers. The children kept their mouths shut after that. If mom and dad didn't believe them, who else would? The bottom line is we (again, not members of this forum specifically, but people in general) are responsible for allowing this type of abuse to go on. |
