Sk Lawson Posts: 4014 Joined: 7th Oct 2010 Location: USA | Posted at 23:38 on 7th December 2010 I am taking an short reprieve for the moment....was just reading an bit of my book on the Depression Year Diary....it's very much as families were back then so far...1932.....though I remember an lot of this stuff in my early days also around the 50's...because it is basically geared on an family level. James my mother's "claim to fame" in life was her musical abilty also...she never could read music, but she'd sit down and listen to something and then go play it as good as we all knew the particular song to sound like...and kind of miracle of her day. I asked her one time what she felt contributed toward this in her life...she said when her younger sister "Katherine" got polio as an kid that she use to play thier family piano for her as she laid beside her and listened. The sister eventually outgrew it by the way to go on and live an normal life, but for mother she kept up playing the music...it relaxed her....so I spent much of my younger years going to bed an night listening to her play...she had an guitar for the most part, I bought her an small piano/organ combo one time and she could play an accordian and also harmoinca as well. She instilled on us all an sense of rythum in music and emotional pleasure for it. I was lucky to grow up in an age of several over lapping musical styles....from country western, to big band and later on instrumentals, to pop, music of the time and into the 70's and with my son into his teenage years. I sent him to Yamaha Music School as an kid for an bit and later on he took to the Saxaphone in school...and men's choir breifly in High School besides Fottball and Scouting. Last time I saw my granfather in an old folks home in Nebraska...they had an piano there...and my little son went up to it and he played "Mary had an little Lamb"...and one of the nurse's came in and started to tell us kids could't play the piano and he stopped her dead...he said...This is my great grandson from Oregon...and he has had lessons...and is playing for me like his grandmother...or my deceased daughter use to play the piano..we won't be long...you may leave now. I could much see he approved of my teaching him or trying to.... of an " talent" my mother had. We have this fella we know in our survival boards and he stores on his land all that is needed to survive life if it were intrupted as we know it now...one of the things he has stored up is muscial instruments that don't need electricity to be played...for he says that books and music are an joy to our souls...and always has been |

Written words stay where they are put - so we all get to read them even if it is later!! They are much better than spoken words which are lost as soon as they are said (unless they are caught on audio, lol) "If music be the food of love, play on", it would be a sorry world without the music and the books. Hi everyone! Midweek already - where does the time fly to? Have a wonderful day Thoughts, prayers & best wishes to all POE members in need of them today.

Timezones make a difference also of course. I also can listen to a tune and play it on the piano, without being able to read a stick of music. In my case it was because my parents put me alongside the piano downstairs, whilst suffering a knee injury (that lasted a full 12 months) and if I wanted them I would bash the piano keys! I remember playing such things as 'Red Sails In The Sunset' and 'I'll Take You Home Again Kathleen' eventually. Hmmmn, brings back memories... Anybody else got a similar ability to tell us about? |

All is quiet at home here today and I am slow at getting the energy level up this morning. We had our xmas party for the South Shields Photo Society last nite and it was a great time but am dragging my bum this morning. No drinking last nite other than coffee or tea which is served along with a variety of sandwiches, treats, hot dishes, etc etc...so time for me to kick it into gear and get motivated. Love coming in here and seeing all your smiling faces and cheerful chats. Will be stopping back in at various times thruout the day to catch up on all the latest chat LOL...Have a Great Day everyone....Hugs to get you started |
