Well done John, it is Mount Stuart on the Isle of Bute .Even though your spelling was incorrect, you had the right house.

The owner of the mansion believes Mount Stuart was the first home in the world to have an indoor heated swimming pool. Mount Stuart is said to contain more marble than any other house in the British Isles.

The fashion designer Stella McCartney was married in the chapel there.Photos: http://www.mountstuart.com/house/

Only person I can think of born in 1919 at the moment is Sir Edmund Hillary, but he was born in New Zealand Undecided

Will have to have a think on this one.

Douglas Reeman, the author, he was in the Navy during WWII, I read all his books about the Atlantic convoys many years ago.

Dont know when or where he was born though, or what rank he got to, but I'll go with him for now.

Edited to add, then there's Alistair Maclean, the author of the excellent HMS Ulysses ?
