Ok with the comments in the favorite picture thread, i got thinking about photoshop, or any photo editing software, what does everybody think?

I use photoshop elements, i see photography as an art really, a way of producing beautiful images, i try not to overphotoshop, and keep it to increasing saturation on most shts. This just increases the colours a bit. My thinking is, when we see a beautiful view/image with our eyes, it is much nicer than the actual photo that comes out of the camera, because, our eyes are a far better lens than any camera! so by 'tweaking' the shot your bringing some of the actual colours back into the image.

Now i'm, not against heavy photoshopping either, and do play about with it, its great fun, and surely another side of photography?? fun!

Before digital cameras we used film, some still do, and then the 'photoshopping' was done in the darkroom!!  i've done this too, and thats good fun too!!

Now its all down to personal choice so i like looking at all photos, all are different and good in their own way., but i just thought i'd see what people think!!

phew!!Laughing

I have Photoshop here too Jason, and other programmes too,  and yes I love using it, i'ts fun, but I never put any of the ones i've altered in anyway on here in POE. This is a 'Pictures of England' site and not really a site just to show off photography, its an information site as far as i'm concerned and therefore I just show the photos of various places as they were taken, whether they be good or bad.  I look at the subject of the photo's and not the way they have been manipulated if you get my meaning.Just my opinion of course!

I personally don't like pictures that don't look normal. Now that doesn't mean I don't like pictures that have been photoshopped, if the pictures are enhanced, and I can't tell, then I think that's very clever.

This is just how I feel, there are others who like to see pictures that have been 'tweaked' or even changed, each to his own I say.

I must admit I've sometimes used photoshop to sharpen an image or two, or do a bit of colour correction. Though I only really do it if it's absolutely necessary. For instance one of our Shotover images where the main subject was some distant fields framed entirely by some nearby trees, when we got home the fields were quite out of focus, and photoshop made the difference between the image being binned or going on the site. It brought it back to life and to how it looked naturally. Basically photoshop can sometimes save an image that would usually be thrown away, and that's a good thing. It is a very useful tool to have.

See I'm not keen on pictures like this, but that is just my own personal taste, where as I know others will think it's wonderful.

I’m a tweaker as you can tell from my pics and I love looking at photos that have been tweaked. Photo editing allows me to be creative and artistic when in reality I don’t have a creative bone in my body.It is all down to personal taste and I respect and admire the work of both tweakers and those who do no editing what so ever.

The editing I do to my shots is my interpretation of what I saw, no camera I have ever used even begins to capture what my eye’s see, after a little editing, even when the shot might look fake to other people it is more like what my eye saw than the original photograph and as long as that shot evokes some kind of emotion even if it‘s only in myself then I am more than happy. Composing a good shot takes skill and so does the artistic skill needed to edit. I have tried on many occasions to edit an awful picture but no matter what I do it still remains an awful shot.

Most modern day cameras start the editing process for you before the shot ever reaches Photoshop by reducing noise reduction and the numerous other functions they are capable of doing. Photo manipulating has always gone on from the beginning of photography, I’m thinking here of the likes of Ansell Adams and his dark room work, it’s just that today with things like Photoshop the job is far more easier and affordable for anybody to give it a go. I believe the real skill with editing is learning to do just the right things and on this score I am just an amature.

Have to agree with you here Sue, and like I said previously, POE is to show the world what England is like, its not really a place to show your editing talents LOL but thats just how I feel.

I like to see both sorts of shots. I think some of the editing is brilliant. I haven't got Photoshop and I haven't got the time or patience to do much editing! I sometimes use the filters on my camera and do some cropping. I can see both points of view. Each to his/her own really and I still believe that this site is not about criticizing other people's photos  - it's about enjoying the one's we like and commenting on those ones and not commenting on the ones we don't like or that we feel indifferent about! Other sites and clubs give criticism but I enjoy my hobby and POE and have enough flack in every day life.

I've come back to add that Lyn G I didn't mean you, - I know you are like me and don't comment if you don't like a photo!  I was more thinking about why Jason started the thread in the first place!
