I wasn't going to add to this thread anymore as I reckon i'm the biggest non believer of all time, but I just had to respond to Andy's posting and say how I totally agree with everything he said! Well done Andy! X You may all ask why do I celebrate Cristmas, well it means nothing to me except an excuse to give and recieve presents to show how much you care, nothing more, nothing to do with any religion of any sort. I don't want to offend anyone, each has their own opinion on the subject and I respect that as long as I'm not expected to go along with it just because they believe and I don't. Religion has and always will be the route of many wars, and as Andy says, thats the one thing we can do without!. The Bible to me has some very good stories.....but thats all they are....stories! Handed down over the years and changed slightly with each new translation. Its like whispering to the person standing next to you, then they whisper to the person next to them etc etc, and by the time it gets to the end the story has changed beyond all recognition! So with all that said, this is my last word on this subject. |

I understand fully what you are saying and you know how much I respect you as a person, a friend and Denzils' lover. I just think it's great we can all get on so well together even though we believe in different things. It would be a boring world if we all thought the same!! |

Church and religion are people, and people are flawed. Thanks for your posts, Andy and Lyn, I certainly respect your views, and agree that we as a forum fellowship do well to respect each other. I've seen otherwise on other boards. I think on the whole we all have a great relationship, and that makes me one very happy person.

As the initiator of this thread, I feel obligated to echo what you all have said about respecting one another's viewpoints on this very personal, emotional and somewhat controversial topic. And I most definitely agree with you, Andy, about the holier than thou stuff. Sharing one's faith is OK, but beating somebody over the head with the Bible or preaching the fire and brimstone is no way to do it. In fact, I would guess that in most cases it has the exact opposite effect. But it was never my intent to try and "convert" anybody to my way of thinking, just perhaps stimulate a little personal reflection. I believe that faith is a gift, and it's offered to all. But when you give somebody a gift you don't beat them over the head with it, or force them to take it, or threaten them if they don't. A gift must be willingly accepted. God doesn't force Himself on anybody. He gave us free will. And that's where "religion" falls down. But as I said a number of times, this isn't about "religion." You are all part of a very special community. That's what I love about this site. We can be goofy, serious, reflective all at the same time. |
