You are right about teaching yourself not to break and swerve at the drop of a hat, but it's such a reflex that I often catch myself doing it without even thinking! I would be devastated if I killed someone's pet dog or cat but it would be infinitely worse to accidentally kill another human being while trying to avoid hitting an animal.
