Los Angeles used to be 8 hours from here when the speed limit was lower. But now it's 75 MPH and you can be there in about six and a half.  When we moved here from PA, we drove from PA to my brother's house in Houston TX - straight thru, no stops, 30 hours -  and then it was another 24 from Houston to Phoenix.  I'm sure it's the same in Oz.

Most of the coastal and inland rural areas are very nice, but the interior is dry and harsh desert.

Gosh golly, talking traveling, with my relatives being "truckers" and farmers way back when, we make it from coast to coast usually in four days easy, we make it from Portland, Oregon to Nevada, the long way, as they say, from dinner time to about 2 or 4 am pull into Reno...Nebraska is two days good traveling...and Canada is about 4 hours away North...the West coast (ocean) is 90 mins away. I never was afraid to travel by car or our camper, because I knew my uncle's would bail me out of trouble, one owns his own trucking company, and they'd have one of his driver's there to rescue me in minutes if I needed it. I use to be out an about all over when I was younger...we belonged to the Elk's Lodge travel club back then also. I've done 16,000 miles just going to an from Florida without counting Canada and California...or Boston. It's an snap these days, and I won't get into the Airlines...makes the world slowly shrink in distance. Now you can buy tickets from the Russians and they will let you travel into "outter space" also.

I'm thinking the Australian interior is even worse than desert Nevada.

It's a road trip just to go shopping here, and a two hour trip to see my podiatrist for my next appointment. I'm glad petrol/gas prices are going down.
